Koan’s Newest Classroom

Koan School is proud to announce the opening of the Begonias class: a new integrated classroom for our families. This elevated needs classroom is specifically for kids who may need more individualized support and smaller teacher to student ratio, who are aged 8-12. The student to teacher ratio is 2.5 to 1, and our staff will consist of specialists in Autism and other neurodevelopment differences as well as special education. The goals of this program include teaching classroom skills, coping with new environments, hands-on progressive learning, and bringing our friends and family into the community.

Our Teacher

Ms. Jazmina, who teaches the Begonia class, prioritizes creating a classroom environment where every student feels valued, safe, and eager to learn. Originally from Texas, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in behavior analysis from The University of North Texas in 2020. Additionally, she passed the TeXes Special Education Exam in 2023 and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Psychology.

Ms. Jazmina's professional journey began as a behavioral therapist and evolved to include providing transition services for middle and high school students. This involved assisting them with post-graduation plans, coaching at instructional camps, providing job skills training, and substitute teaching. These varied experiences have shaped her career path, leading her to find great satisfaction in teaching and helping others succeed.

Parent testimonials

“He was grumpy last Friday because he wanted to go to Koan. So many firsts with Koan!”

“Not settling, and seeking ways to  ‘teach the way he learns.’ He is truly enjoying his teacher and her assistant, and new friends in his classroom.”

"He isn't left behind simply because he's different; he's fully included in his class and throughout the school in every possible way. He's viewed as a valued member of the community, not placed in an isolation room.”

“His teachers and friends are excited for him to come to school! We have never experienced anything like this in our world.”

"He asks me to 'go to Koan, please'— he never uses so many words!"

“She is patient, kind and understanding.  I love being able to talk to her about my child and not feel like we are judged.  She doesn’t flinch when we discuss our struggles and needs”

Koan has an “understanding of learning styles and being able to accommodate his needs to provide him a further development of learning.”

“He was happy about school on Sunday night.  He’s previously had the Sunday blues like he had to clock in at the factory Monday morning.”

“He’s loving life.  He was beaming yesterday when he told me about petting the donkey.  And he sang to me in Spanish Tuesday, very big deal.”
