Summer Programs 2024

The Koan School is excited to announce our Summer Programs.  The programs are open to Koan Students as well as others in the community and will run from June 10 - August 2, 2024 (except July 1 - 5).  Come join us for some summer fun!

All camps will be held on the Koan School campus. Check in will be at the High School building. For planning and staffing purposes, all fees are due by May 1, 2024. Payments may be made by check or Gradelink. If the minimum number of students are not met, fees will be refunded by May 15, 2024. Drop ins are possible, subject to availability.  Please email us for questions, or sign up for camp here . Summer Clubhouse
8:30-5:30 M-F
$250/ week 
The Summer Clubhouse is unstructured indoor and outdoor play.  Campers should bring their own lunch/ snacks, water bottle and sunscreen. Minimum 10 students each week.
Summer Begonias Class
8:30-3:30 M-F
$375/ week
This camp is for neurodivergent learners who need more individualized support and a smaller teacher to student ratio. The goals of this camp program include coping with new environments, hands-on progressive learning, and fun project-based exploration. Minimum of 4 students each week.

Weekly Themed Camps

The following camps will be held for 1 week only and can be combined with the Summer Clubhouse. All camps are held from 9:00- 12:00 Monday through Friday. Fees are $200/week for a single camp and $150/ week if combined with Summer Clubhouse.

Sewing Fiber Arts
June 10-14
Ages 6 and up
Campers will learn hand stitching and beginning machine sewing.  We will use a simple pattern to create a skirt or pajama pants.  Along the way there will be lessons on the artists who use sewing in their work.
Ceramics Camp
June 17-21
Ages 7 and up
Campers will explore different hand building techniques (pinch, coil, slab) as well as different surface decorating techniques (carving, stamping, etching, etc). The final day of camp we will focus on glazing and hand painting. Artwork will be available for pick up the following week.
Pokemon Adventure Camp
June 10-14
Ages 6 and up
Campers will craft their own Pokeballs, engage in epic battles, create Pokemon-themed crafts, follow exciting how-to-draw videos, watch thrilling Pokemon shows, and even produce their own Pokemon-themed show! Plus, we'll explore our property through the eyes of a Pokemon Trainer, discovering hidden treasures and encountering wild Pokemon along the way.
Music Camp
June 17-21
Ages 11 and up
Learn the fascinating world of Music through multiple instruments! Camp instructed by local hero Eric Nichelson.
Murals Camp
June 24-28
Ages 6 and up
Campers will collaborate to design and paint a new mural on campus.  We will practice transfer and enlargement techniques such as projection and grid transfer.  We will learn drawing and painting skills.  Each day will include a discussion on a significant mural or muralist.
Molecular Movements
June 24-28
Ages 11 and up
Join our Molecular Movements summer camp for an exciting adventure into the world of atoms and their a mazing connections! In this week-long workshop, we'll become junior scientists, uncovering the secrets of chemical bonds!
Horsemanship Camp
July 8-12
Ages 12 and up
Campers will learn how to care for horses, how they communicate, as well as basic anatomy and first aid.  Additionally, we will learn the 7 games that horses placeplay, grooming basics, and so much more. 
Forensic Science Camp
July 22-26
Ages 11 and up
This camp employs chemistry, physics, and biology along with the use of reasoning and common sense. We will be introduced to the techniques needed to accomplish a thorough criminal investigation. Fingerprint Analysis, Soil and Mineral Analysis, Hair Analysis, Document Analysis, and Analysis of Drugs and Poisons will all be covered with hands-on activities. This club is open to 5th grade and up. 
Dungeons & Dragons
July 15-19
Ages 11 and up
Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game created in the 70s that has become the model for many tabletop games created worldwide. Players interact with one another to create characters and interact with a world that mirrors the real world in many ways. One player will take on the role of the dungeon master who builds and controls the world, creating difficulties that the other players must overcome as a team. Dice rolls are used as the physics in this game; determining the outcome of uncertain events to add realism. (Max 12 students.)
Ancient Civilization
July 22-26
Ages 11 and up
Campers will learn about culture, architecture, geography, technology, mythology, and history related to different civilizations around the world including, Egypt, Japan, Australia, Mesoamerica, Greece, and Mesopotamia.  Throughout the camp, we will learn about different arts, crafts and games from these civilizations. 
Junior Master Gardener
June 17- 21
Ages 8 - 10
The Junior Master Gardener program is an international youth gardening program of the University Cooperative Extension network. JMG engages children in novel, “hands-on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind. We will learn about everything from plant growth and development to horticulture to life skills/ career exploration.  
3-D Modeling and Printing
July 29- August 2
Ages 11 and up
Join our week-long summer camp dedicated to introducing campers to the exciting world of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) modeling! Throughout the week, campers will dive into the fundamentals of CAD modeling using a user-friendly web-based program. Equipped with Chromebooks and mice, campers will learn how to bring their creative ideas to life through digital design.By the end of the week, campers will emerge with newfound skills and confidence in CAD modeling, ready to explore endless possibilities in the realm of digital design and 3-D printing.
